Spine Tumors Q & A
What are spine tumors?
A spine tumor is a mass that develops in the nerves, bones, or tissues in and around your spine. Some tumors are harmless (benign), while others are malignant (cancerous).
If you experience back or neck pain that occurs alongside muscle weakness or a lack of coordination, and it doesn’t improve within a few days, make an appointment at LA Spine Group with Dr. Kharuna.
What are the symptoms of spine tumors?
Symptoms of spine tumors include:
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Muscle weakness
- Instability
- Loss of balance
- Sensory problems
If the tumor is located near a group of nerves, you might also experience tingling, numbness, or pins and needles sensations in your hands and feet.
What are the types of spine tumors?
At LA Spine Group, Dr. Khurana treats various types of spine tumors, including:
Epidural tumors
Epidural tumors form in the bones of your spine (vertebrae). As they grow, they compress your spinal cord and nerve roots, causing pain and inflammation.
Intramedullary tumors
Intramedullary tumors form inside the cells of your spinal cord.
Intradural tumors
These tumors form inside the inner lining of your spinal cord, called the dura. Most intradural tumors are non-cancerous (benign).
Extradural tumors
Extradural tumors form on the outer lining of your spinal cord. Most extradural tumors are benign.
How are spine tumors diagnosed?
To diagnose a spine tumor, Dr. Khurana reviews your medical history and conducts a comprehensive physical examination. Afterward, he orders diagnostic imaging, including X-rays, an MRI, and CT scans. These procedures allow Dr. Khurana to assess the size, location, and type of tumor and develop a treatment plan.
How are spine tumors treated?
Treatment of a spine tumor depends on various factors, including the location and size of the tumor and if it’s cancerous or benign. If Dr. Khurana can easily access the tumor and remove it, he might recommend minimally invasive surgery. If your tumor is cancerous, Dr. Khurana might refer you to an oncologist for radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, or a combination of all three.
